The Literacy Journal

Featuring a literacy experience by Ms. Haskins, librarian

The Little Prince was the first book I read in French. Reading this book was like a mindfulness meditation practice. My imperfect French helped me slow down and give my full attention, and I quickly rested into a place of attention to the words, the rhythm, the beauty. That experience gave me a taste of a different way of approaching life, which I took with me in my thoughts and feelings and actions. It increased my comfort with the unexpected.

I've re-read the book in English and the magic wasn't quite there. The translation reading was particularly influential on my current reading, since I have experienced how significantly language impacts the story. Word choice and even which words are available to a particular language is really interesting to me, and helps me pay attention to some of the hidden cultural dimensions of text.
